St. Frances of Rome reads at night by her guardian angel's light

Told by a priest to describe the angel she saw beside her for more than twenty-four years, the wife and mother said he was about the height of a nine-year-old.

A painting of St. Frances of Rome in a white veil, cradling the Christ Child, with the Blessed Virgin Mary in a red robe beside her and a winged angel standing at her side.
Saint Frances of Rome holds the Christ Child, with an angel at her side, in Orazio Gentileschi's The Vision of St. Frances of Rome. The painting was made in 1615–1619 AD and hangs in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino.

The Church keeps the memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels today. Saint Frances of Rome, a wife and mother who died in 1440 AD, told the priests who heard her confession that she saw her guardian angel beside her for more than twenty-four years. St. Frances read and wrote at night by the light around the angel, and the angel disappeared from her sight whenever she did wrong.

St. Bernard tells monks his care is 'useless' and angels guard them

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a twelfth-century abbot in France, told his monks in a Lenten sermon that God had not thought an abbot's care enough for them and had given them angels as guardians. St. Bernard asked the monks to respect, love and trust their angels, and gave the monks words to call out when temptation was at its worst. The Church reads a passage from the sermon in her daily prayer on the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, October 2.

About this picture

AI-generated image, in the manner of stained glass after Lucien Bégule's windows at Saint-Irénée, Lyons, from the paper's reference portrait based on San Ireneo, vitral (Lucien Bégule, 1901, Église Saint-Irénée, Lyon) View source artwork.

Christians in prison at Lyons sent one of the city's priests, Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, to Rome this year with their letters to the Pope about a man who claimed to prophesy and was dividing the churches of Asia Minor. He came home to a church in which at least forty-eight Christians had been killed, among them the bishop, St. Pothinus. St. Irenaeus was made bishop in St. Pothinus's place.
